Adoption from an adoptee’s point of view

A member of our support group shared this great article with me about adoption from an adoptee’s perspective. As prospective adoptive parents, it’s easy to view adoption solely from our own point of view because choosing an agency, getting our home study approved and waiting for your child can be stressful and time-consuming. It’s important to remember that adoption is a three sided relationship between the adoptive parents, the birth parents and the adoptee. This article provides insight into one part of that triad. It’s interesting to read that even in the best circumstances, adoptees are left feeling “alien” and fearing abandonment. The are important things to keep in mind for the future when we are parenting.

One of the things that comes up often in our group meetings is the difficulty in financing an adoption. Adoption can be an expensive process. Helpusadopt.org is an organization that provides grants for those who are adopting. They can provide grants up to $15,000. Families must include a valid home study and a copy of their most recent tax return with their completed application and personal statement. If a grant is awarded, funds are released to adoption professionals (adoption lawyers and adoption agencies) when an invoice is due.

They award grants three times a year. For the June cycle, the deadline is April 17, 2015. For the October cycle, the deadline is August 14, 2015.
